As a great opportunity to boost their professional careers, eleven students from different Chilean universities were selected to be part of Inria Chile's mobility program, allowing them to carry out research internships in project teams at different Inria centers in France.
The students were invited at Inria Chile's headquarters to officially welcome them to the program. During the session they were introduced to various aspects of the internship, including the work to be done, the places and teams where they were chosen and recommendations for their stay in the European country.
They also had the opportunity to hear testimonials from alumni of the program from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, who shared their experiences and how these contributed to the growth of their careers and the deepening of their knowledge. During the event, they were also able to exchange experiences and explore in greater detail various aspects of this initiative.

It is a fantastic opportunity to experience what professional research would be like and also to see what the culture shock is like there, to try to expand my knowledge and to meet a lot of people. I think it is a good opportunity to work and understand a little more about professional research. Thank you very much to Inria for this opportunity and I appreciate it very much. It is an incredible opportunity.

It's the second internship I'm going to do since I finished my degree in astronomy and the truth is I'm very happy and very grateful. I would like once I get to the research center to be able to learn a little more about what data science is like, artificial intelligence... I've always wanted to work with that.

Being selected is amazing and especially being able to do an internship at one of Inria's centers. It's a great opportunity, you have to take it! I am already looking forward to continue studying, and to have the possibility of doing a doctorate in my area of study. This definitely opens a door and a platform for me to continue my studies.

Nayat Sánchez Pi, Director of Inria Chile, highlights the benefits of the program, especially the professional projection of the interns: “The students have a fantastic training period. Both in the insertion in a culture such as the french one, as well as the opportunity to experience, some of them, a first approach to what research is and what it implies. We have many successful cases of students who “get a taste” for research and end up doing doctorates or master's degrees after Inria Chile's internship programs.
More than 70 Chilean students have completed internships at Inria in France as a thanks to the program
The program, which was created by Inria Chile in 2017, has already allowed more than 70 students from the Universidad de Chile,, the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María to carry out a research internship at Inria's centers in France. Since 2024, the University of Concepción has joined this program that allows the co-financing of scholarships for selected students who will be inserted in one of Inria's project teams.
During their internship at Inria, those selected will work on a specific research topic, under the guidance of a supervisor, an Inria researcher, having the opportunity to discover the international top-level research environment and to collaborate in obtaining scientific results.
This initiative, which responds to Inria Chile's objective of training the talents of the future through research in science and digital technologies, has had significant results since its inception, with 80% of students continuing in the field of research after their return to Chile and more than a quarter of alumni pursuing doctoral studies in France, Chile and other countries. During their three-month internships, 25% of the students have participated in the elaboration of a scientific publication and more than 25% have presented a paper at a scientific conference in France, Germany or Chile.
