One of Inria's main objectives, both in France and in Chile, is to train future talents in digital sciences and technologies. That is why the Inria Chile Mobility Program was created in 2018, allowing students from Chilean universities that are partners of the Program to carry out a research internship at one of Inria's 10 centers in the European country.
73 students from the University of Chile, the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (UC), and the Federico Santa María Technical University (USM) have already participated in the program and have been able to join project teams at the Institute for three months, working on a specific research topic and supervised by a researcher in France.
Thanks to this program:
-
More than 30% of the students participated in the preparation of a scientific publication.
-
More than 25% participated in a scientific conference presenting their research results.
-
More than 35% are pursuing doctoral studies, either in Chile, France, or another country in the European Union.
These internships are carried out thanks to agreements signed between Inria, Inria Chile, and the Chilean universities, which in particular allow the co-financing of the internships for the students selected to participate in the program.

This program has been an incredible work experience. Facing a challenge that nobody has done before has forced me to improve my problem-solving skills and navigate high-uncertainty environments. What I have learned through research has helped me to understand in greater depth this field of computing (Machine Learning), which today is revolutionizing the world. In the future, I may do a PhD in this field or work in a company where the use of AI is key.

I think that learning a new work dynamic, different from what I was used to, I had to be more proactive and insistent to be able to coordinate meetings and advance the investigation as I wanted. Well, the work in the team I had was more relaxed and less controlled than in Chile. In addition to learning about the topic of the internship, I delved into an area that I was not familiar with and it was interesting and enriching. It is an intense experience but it gives you a very real approach to scientific research, to being in a work team, to living in another country.

The most valuable thing I learned in the internship was about the process of working in science and research, understanding that it is a long process and full of uncertainties. I learned the importance of persistence, order, and structure at work, as well as the value of asking for help and collaborating with colleagues. Additionally, I understood the need to maintain a balance between work and personal life. I consider that the most valuable knowledge that I will apply is related to applying a good work ethic.

The learning from this period was integral, impacting both my professional and personal aspects. On a professional level, I improved my technical skills in programming and mathematics, as well as my soft skills in effective communication and collaborative work. I emphasize that this experience had a strong impact on my maturation as a future professional/researcher, teaching me to work intelligently and efficiently to achieve complicated goals and to face my limits through intelligent planning and the support of a good team. In addition, it provided me with tools and motivation to promote research and the use of advanced mathematics in the Chilean and international industry.

The work is highly technical, with a very high level of mathematics and requiring considerable acuity of thinking. It is truly a unique experience, which if lived with the mental state of openness and with genuine curiosity towards all aspects of the country, is enjoyed tremendously and can absolutely change the way of thinking.

This experience also taught me the importance of adaptability and empathy in an international environment. I would definitely recommend this experience to other Chilean students. It is a unique opportunity to develop professional, academic, and personal skills in an international context. Exposure to new cultures and work methods, along with the possibility of forming lasting and meaningful connections are aspects that can transform both your professional career and your personal life.

It was a tremendous experience that taught me how to adjust to new and challenging contexts, performing purely engineering tasks. I learned to look for areas of collaboration with people working on different topics and to make my knowledge compatible with current problems. It will help me a lot from the point of view of perseverance, teamwork with people from different cultures, and of course, the experience of not only being in another country but also working and having to respond in it.
