During the event in which Inria Chile celebrated its 10th anniversary, the General Director of Science at Inria, Jean-Frédéric Gerbeau, and the General Director of Innovation at Inria, François Cuny, officially handed over to the highest academic authorities in the country four white papers that the organization developed on the most relevant topics in digital sciences: Internet of Things (IoT), Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Agriculture and Digital Technology. Inria Chile translated the white papers into Spanish and conducted a technical review and adaptation of the texts, which will also be sent to all universities in the country.

The white papers are documents that provide society, authorities, industries, and the scientific community itself with a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in a particular topic or complex challenge, presenting research directions and their potential social impact.

Inria's white papers address the main current challenges in computer science and mathematics, and they showcase the actions of their project-teams in a specific line of work.

Internet of Things (IoT)

IoT consists of methods to articulate advanced systems that consolidate to create mechanisms for acquiring and transmitting information through networks, with a special emphasis on cloud computing and the Internet of Things. Internet-connected objects are already part of our daily lives and are generating profound changes in how we live and work. As a result, this line of research is already impacting industries and public services and will further deepen its reach and impact in the coming years.

Therefore, it is crucial to understand this technology and comprehend the challenges it brings.

To achieve this, Inria presents the white paper "Internet of Things (IoT): Social Challenges and Scientific Research Fields in Relation to IoT," which determines the scope of IoT, describes its origins and development, and analyzes its prospects. It identifies the main social, technical, and scientific challenges related to the subject.

Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity consists of protecting computer systems, ensuring three properties of information, services, and IT infrastructure: confidentiality, integrity, and availability. It is one of the major challenges of the digital era.

The rapid development and adoption of new technologies in the industry and everyday life create new vulnerabilities that can compromise security, emphasizing the importance of research and development in the field of computer security.

The white paper "Cybersecurity: Current Challenges and Research Directions by Inria" explains and analyzes the main current challenges in cybersecurity.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

AI is a technological paradigm shift, whose impacts are experienced daily by people in all contexts. It is comparable to the Industrial Revolution, as the internet and the digital era have redefined various industries, eliminating and creating new jobs and occupations that did not exist before.

Artificial intelligence encompasses actions related to advanced methods of machine learning, deep learning, computational intelligence, adaptive and autonomous systems, and their application in contexts such as computer vision and natural language understanding.

The white paper "Artificial Intelligence: Current Challenges and Inria's Involvement" provides an introduction to the challenges posed by advances in research in this field.

Agriculture and digital technology

Agriculture is one of the economic activities that has been greatly impacted by changes caused by both external factors, such as climate change, and intrinsic factors, such as innovation. Food security and the sustainability of the agribusiness are global concerns.

Thus, the idea of digital agriculture has gained strength and is presented as an opportunity to contribute to the development of agriculture for the benefit of farmers and consumers.

The white paper "Agriculture and Digital Technology: Maximizing the Use of Digital Technology to Transition Towards Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems" addresses this topic and provides research perspectives to support the deployment of digital technology in agriculture and the food chain in the best possible way.
