Inria has as one of its five main focuses modeling and simulation with special emphasis on modeling environmental and geophysical phenomena. Recent results in these areas have created important opportunities, but at the same time imply great challenges. At Inria Chile we seek to develop these directions and, in turn, apply these principles in projects related to marine ecology, climate change mitigation, accident prevention, mining, smart agriculture, among others.

Objectives and Duties of the Position
The duties of the position are:
- Linking PDEs and data: Coupling complex environmental models with observational data (data assimilation).
- Hybrid models: combination of PDE solvers and deep neural networks.
- Navier-Stokes equations.
- Development, calibration and validation of mechanistic models.
- Improvement of data collection procedures to include relevant information for the creation of analytical systems.
- Attraction of R&D funds with industry and academia.
- Do ad-hoc analysis, visualize and report results clearly.
- Co-development of software with Inria project teams.
- Participation in the implementation, maintenance and support of experimental platforms and software developments related to these platforms.
- Participation of a network of development experts within the center and/or at national and international level.
- Creation of training courses, sharing knowledge of technology watch, tools or recommended development methods.
- Technical mentoring of junior engineers or interns as part of technology development actions.
- Prepare reports, scientific papers, minutes and reports as required, in collaboration with Inria Chile team members.
- Participate in dissemination actions such as courses, conferences, lectures, etc.
Role Specifications
Educational background:
- PhD in computer science, informatics, engineering, statistics, applied mathematics, and related careers.
Competencies:
- Publications in the area in renowned media.
- Autonomy and leadership to organize R&D projects and attract funding.
- Advanced command of English. French desirable.
- Ability to find solutions to ill-defined problems by leveraging pattern detection on potentially large data sets.
- Programming languages: Python and at least one of the following: JavaScript, Java, Scala, C, C++, R or Matlab.
Desired knowledge:
- Notions of machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, as well as the machine learning development stack (scikit-learn, Tensorflow/PyTorch, Jupyter, Spark, etc.).
- Skills in applied statistics, design of experiments, distributions, hypothesis testing, etc.
- Experience in maintaining an open source project with packaging, regular releases on standard distribution channels and issue tracking.
- Coordination and project management skills.
