Inria has as one of its five priority focuses the understanding and visualization of complex data, artificial intelligence and machine learning and human-computer interaction (HCI). In this sense, we have developed important applications in astronomy, climate change, smart cities and agriculture, among others.

Inria Chile seeks to extend its team with a to lead an R&D project focused on designing, implementing and evaluating processing, machine learning and interactive visualization systems. These systems aim to help in decision making and understanding of results in different applications such as astronomy, understanding biological structures, as well as applications in industries such as mining or retail.

3 months probationary fixed-term contract (then permanent contract in case of successful completion of the missions entrusted).

Objectives and Duties of the Position

The duties of the position are:

  • State of the art in the understanding and visualization of big data volumes.
  • Development of immersive tools (augmented reality or virtual reality).
  • Methods for understanding and explaining machine learning models.
  • Development of environments for visualization of large amounts of data.
  • Improvement of data collection procedures to include relevant information for the creation of analytical systems.
  • Attracting R&D funding with industry and academia.
  • Do ad-hoc analysis, visualize and report results clearly.
  • Co-development of software with Inria project teams.
  • Participation in the implementation, maintenance and support of experimental platforms and software developments related to these platforms.
  • Participation of a network of development experts within the center and/or at national and international level.
  • Creation of training courses, sharing knowledge of technology watch, tools or recommended development methods.
  • Technical mentoring of junior engineers or interns as part of technology development actions.
  • Prepare reports, scientific papers, minutes and reports as required, in collaboration with Inria Chile team members.
  • Participate in dissemination actions such as courses, conferences, lectures, etc.

Role Specifications

Educational background:

  • PhD in computer science, informatics, engineering, statistics, applied mathematics, and related careers.

Competencies:

  • Publications in the area in renowned media.
  • Autonomy and leadership to organize R&D projects and attract funding.
  • Advanced command of English. French desirable.
  • Ability to find solutions to ill-defined problems by leveraging pattern detection on potentially large data sets.
  • Programming languages: Python and at least one of the following: JavaScript, Java, Scala, C, C++, R or Matlab.

Desired knowledge:

  • Notions of machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, as well as the machine learning development stack (scikit-learn, Tensorflow/PyTorch, Jupyter, Spark, etc.).
  • Skills in applied statistics, design of experiments, distributions, hypothesis testing, etc.
  • Methodologies: Scrum, Test Driven Development, Continuous Integration.
  • Experience in maintaining an open source project with packaging, regular releases on standard distribution channels and issue tracking.
  • Coordination and project management skills.
